One of the reasons to make this post is to provide background to fans who came into fandom after 2000. Some of them argue that slash fans never faced "oppression" (and I won't even try to define what that means) in the fandom world. While that may be the case today (in some areas of fandom in parts of world), it was certainly not true historically. Too often when we discuss "fandom" we fail to mention time and place and assume that our experiences are universal. And from there outrage grows when our experiences are contradicted. When just a few more words or context might help.
