Connie Faddis has graciously offered to allow us to post her fic online. For now, they will be available in PDF format download. If someone wants to convert them to html and post them on a fic archive, I'd be happy to put you in contact with her.

First up: The Place of Men-Made-Stone by Connie Faddis

Spock joins an anthropological landing party on a desert planet in hopes of a bit of R & R and ends up experiencing an episode from the planet’s past in which the indigenous Ummir drive the lizard-like Kivari to destruction for having enslaved them - creating the rock formations in the valley.

Connie Faddis Star Trek Fan Fic: The Third Wheel

Connie Faddis has graciously offered to allow us to post her fic online. For now, they will be available in PDF format download. If someone wants to convert her Star Trek fic to html and post them on a fic archive, I'd be happy to put you in contact with her.

Second up: The Third Wheel  published in the print fanzine Interphase.

Two reviews from Fanlore:

  • an excellent story, 'The Third Wheel' written from McCoy's point of view, which captures well the deep-down feeling between McCoy and Spock that we all expected was hidden there somewhere (1976)

  • It also follows Connie's pattern of both De Profundis and Mojave Crossing -- starting out good, and then somehow, magically, late in the story, something inside the story fuses and melts and transforms into something incredible and breathtaking and very different. And in the last conversation between Spock and McCoy it's no longer idfic but it's a pitch-perfect moment of connection, really sincere, meaningful, and just plain lovely. Like a plot twist, except it's not the plotline that gets twisted. An emotion growth-twist? A character-relationship-arc twist? I don't know, but the ending of The Third Wheel is the most heartwarming new thing I've read in some time (2014)

SPN Recs: Something For Everyone - Gen, Slash, RPS

A grab bag of recs

1. [livejournal.com profile] rivkat wrote an excellent coda to Sex & Violence that captures Dean's state of mind. Short and should be read before next week's episode.
Steadfast - Gen - Dean’s still bleeding.

2. And speaking of [livejournal.com profile] rivkat, she took a favorite trope of mine - amnesia - and gave it a twist, a turn and then several good screws. OK, bad puns aside, go forth and read
Only Sweeter - Slash -Dean gets amnesia; Sam tries to use it to fix him.

3. I may have mentioned this writer before - [livejournal.com profile] rogue_clasique - but her I'd Drive All Night series is compelling and character driven. I've been devouring the series these past few weeks. Gen. Start with the first story here. She has written two sequels - all are completed. AU. John's missing, and Dean is hurt. Sam is trying to hold it together.

4. The Doors Of Time by [livejournal.com profile] felisblanco. People have commented that this RPS AU story is original fic. And it is. The concept is both creative and fresh and the writing deft- RPS AU
It’s not like he doesn’t try to fit in and make friends, he really does. It just seems like nothing he does is good enough for them. If he smiles they blink. If he speaks they stare. And whenever they see him coming they get this panicked look in their eyes like they want to run away and they don’t even know why. Jensen knows why. It’s the same thing that makes his dad worry and his mom cry. That makes Nana tell his parents he’s going to Hell, not even caring that he can hear her. It’s what makes him ‘weird’.

5. RPS AU - Jared and Jensen as spies? Someone You Might Have Been by [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter
Jared's a secret agent, Jensen's his handler, eventually there will be angst, porn and plot. Right now, Jared is just a bad ass and Jensen is stubbornly unimpressed.

6. [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck is one of my new favorites. I'd love to meet her/him and chat about the story lines and characterizations.

Impossible to Tell By Candle Beck - Slash (read the warnings)
Tonight Dean almost kills his brother. They're in this church. It's being ripped apart from the inside out, great seams opening in the stone walls and shattering the stained glass into pieces as small as rain. Their dad left them, telling them they'd be safe here. He might have used the word 'sanctuary.'

[livejournal.com profile] candle_beck's other Supernatural fic can be found here. I also love Eight Things You Should Know - funny, short and sweet.
The first thing you should know: Dean annoys the living hell out of Sam.

My SPN Recs 2008 - Private Collection

From my private collection of recs from 2008. They range from humor to horror, slash to gen. (NOTE: Some of these recs are for same sex stories with mature themes, among them there may be stories and/or discussions of consensual incest. You must be 18 or older to read these works.)

1. Schmoop vid alert. "The epic love story of Sam and Dean."

2. Funny short J2 snippet.

3. Common Fate. (Sam/Dean), 10,000 words. Dean Winchester works in insurance: brought up in foster care, he’s never hunted, never fired a gun, and never owned a car. Then, one day, he meets a guy called Sam.

4. Misunderestimate (Sam/Dean), 3000 words. Maybe, just sometimes, violence is the answer. Or not.

5. Apocrypha (slash) ( Dean/*coff*Lucifer*coff*, R) In hell, Dean screams for his brother, and Sam comes to see him.
Dark with a twist.

6. Jumping-Off Point. (Sam/Dean), 7,500 words). Writer's take on Sam getting Dean out of the deal.
I liked the descriptions and the sense of place in this story.

7. Into His Hand. (J2 AU, RPS) 50,000 words. JR Ackles is a professional bullrider at the top of his game. He's got one thing on his mind: winning the championship belt buckle and the right to call himself the best in the world. His unwavering dedication and focus is finally put to the test in the form of JT Padalecki, an up-and-coming rider new to the professional ranks, who has his sights set on winning the PBR finals - and Jensen. Cowboys ride and get by on grit and tough determination - the question facing Jensen is if they have to do it alone.
As good - if not better - than most original fic.

8. Do I Seem Bulletproof To You? (J2 AU, RPS), 96,000 words. When he can't find any acting work, Jared takes a job as driver and bodyguard to Jensen, who is an extremely expensive prostitute with a bad habit of attracting crazy people.
One of the more interesting hookerfics I've read. A story about adults with adult reactions. One character stumble at the end, but satisfying.

9. Golden Lights Go Dark Tonight (Gen), 5000 words. In the beginning, Sam only wanted to save Dean. By the end, everything and nothing had changed.
I liked the pacing.

10. And All But He Departed, (Gen) 5,000 words. Sam’s first coherent thought was nguhhhh.
As a Terri Pratchett fan, I adored this story

11. thought I could let you go in grace. (Sam/Dean) short, Episode coda for Long Distance Call.

12. This Is The Sun Gone Down (Sam/Dean) The blood of a demon made Sam, but it can also save him. A story of one out of many, and the slow slide into love. AU.
New take on how demonic blood could lead to mental illness. as an fyi...a happy ending.

13. 13 Bound Avenue, Hamistagan ( NC-17, Dean/Jo, Dean/Jo/Sam, Dean/Sam.) Dean has a wife, a house, a steady job, a brand new ride and a charmed life. And he realizes he's not in control of any of it.
I don't want to spoil the premise but this story offers an innovative take on hell. The writing is a bit raw, but I liked the twists

14. SPN Pic spam. The many faces of Dean. The many faces of Sam.

Skimming Clouds & Breathing Fire - FIC: Tiger Boy 1/1 by [livejournal.com profile] pdragon76
Dean’s favoring his left side. John sees when his son’s cutting back through the front bar from the bathroom. Probably wouldn’t have noticed if he wasn’t looking for it. But when Dean sits again, he’s canted slightly to the left, and John knows he’s copped it harder than he let on back at the room. And it serves him right. It really does. That’s what you get when you’re a cocky little shit who veers off track at the speed of light to circle round on a black dog. Like the sonuvabitch knew where it was gonna break cover before the goddamn mutt did.

Dean wonders how he can be Chosen when he feels like this. When he feels like this about Sam. Burning up, bodies sweat slicked, sliding skin to skin, whispered words and moans, fingers twined tight into fists made of both their hands. Supernatural Fic Recs: Come On In, We've Got It All

I was chatting about long plotty case stories in Supernatural fandom with cofax7 this weekend. So once again here are two such case stories that I have mentioned here before:

*Joshua Tree by cofax7 (The Winchesters take a break from demon-hunting to help solve the mysterious death of a rock-climber in Joshua Tree National Park.)

*Beach Blanket Poltergeist by hansbekhart (Obviously, Dean and Sam have never made their way to Santa Cruz, California to put down rabid ghosts and stop up a hell mouth. We have a lot of ghost stories in the area, but as for actual ghosts? That depends on what you believe in.) *And then if you like both het and slash but are not into Wincest try this story that deals with Deans' life after Sam leaves for Staford. I think of this more as a character study with the sex supporting Dean's personal journey.

1300 Days by stele3 (GEN, includes both het/slash sex, but that isn't the story's focus. PG-13 to R for violence, sex, language, and drug use. Mentions of suicidal behavior) It hadn’t been four years, actually. Somewhere in the darkness of an Arizona back road, Sam piped up with a revelation: between that April day when he’d left them in the baking heat of the South Dakota Badlands, and the Halloween night when Dean had shown up unannounced at his door (through his door, actually), there had been exactly 1300 turns of the Earth. Dean grunted, and thanked every benevolent spirit he knew that the darkness of night hid his face. *If you want kickass original female characters,

stele3 has concluded her Amazing Incredible Adventures of Freakboy and Dykegirl (GEN - includes het/slash/femslash. PG-13 to NC-17 for language, sex, violence, drug use, bodyswap, genderswap, femslash, and dinosaurs.) This is not a 'het' or a slash story - although there is a lot of love between Dean and the OFC Kim. I really cannot classify it but it is one of the more original pieces of SPN fic.

*Speaking of original fic, I am enjoying [livejournal.com profile] traveller's In That Bright Land (Jensen, Jared, AU, Texas panhandle, summer 1936.) Like cofax7's Joshua Tree it has a wonderful sense of time and place that feels very fresh and unique. It is a WIP. *And last, if you're into het, take a moment to peruse vinylroad's Supernatural fic - her het is complex with a tilt towards the sad. Like most het in this fandom it sometimes weaves in and out of Wincest, but it pulls off a difficult balance between porny and character building. Catch her writing here most of this fic is now locked. As always my gen recs are here and my het recs are here. Previous spn recs are also here

SPN Recs v. 43: The Sweet and Sour Writers

(NOTE: Some of these recs are for same sex stories with mature themes, among them there may be stories and/or discussions of consensual incest. You must be 18 or older to read these works.

Coming up with these themes is hard and frankly there are a number of writers who would fit this particular theme - the sweet (funny and tender) and the sour (dark and angsty). But here goes.

[livejournal.com profile] sevenfists fic has a lot of humor woven among the sweet. Great examples are
Art of Manly Hugging (Sometimes, you know, Dean just needs a goddamn hug.)
Green and Gamboge (Sam's halfway through his Crichton novel when Dean comes banging in, smeared with grease. "We've got gremlins," he says)

She writes slash, gen and het - an all rounder. She has also written one of the hottest Jared/Jensen/Sandy RPF stories (Geography For Beginners) - so she is what I call an "EOFW" (Equal Opportunity Fan Writer).

As for the sour (or more serious) try:
Swing Low (What's dead should stay dead)
Birds of America (After a certain point, you can't turn back) and
The Vagaries of Disbelief (Wishing for something didn't mean it was going to happen, though. There were a lot of things Dean wasn't sure about in life, but he knew that for dead certain.)

[livejournal.com profile] sevenfists
uses cut tags and offers clear and detailed warnings and ratings on all her fic.

Next there is [livejournal.com profile] sanyin.
Her funny edges towards crack (OK let's be honest - her funny walks deep into crack and then starts splashing about with abandon).
The Pleasures of Exile (The one with beauty, beast and the Empire State Building.) offers one of the most original RPS takes on the show. And did I mention it was funny?

and for the sour try
Tied You With Her Flaxen Hair (There are stories that wind around arms...) and
Easy Descent (Dark corridors and men that hang from trees. Sam wonders if he'll see his father here.)

for a blend of sweet and sour try Be Good (The gift of obedience is double edged.)

[livejournal.com profile] sanyin is another writer who touches on many themes and covers a lot of ground: slash, het, RPF and RPS. She uses uses cut tags and offers clear and detailed warnings and ratings on all her fic.

SPN Recs v. 42: Writers That Make You Stand Up And Pay Attention

(NOTE: Some of these recs are for same sex stories with mature themes, among them there may be stories and/or discussions of consensual incest. You must be 18 or older to read these works.

There has been way too little Supernatural content in this journal lately. But I am beta-ing a very intense SPN vid (oh Dean!) and it has fired me up again.

I thought I'd showcase a few of my favorite writers today. There are so many, so I am grabbing a few randomly. Today, two writers who challenge themselves, the readers, and their characters by asking: What if....? If you're looking for simple case stories or comfortable "Sam and Dean and the Impala and their epic love" tales, then these may not be writers for you (more on those later).

[livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur
Writes mainly gen with some slash tossed in for leavening. Her writing is solid, she takes time building both the world and the characters (very important when you deviate from canonical characterization or even conventionally accepted views of the characters). She also has written a few thoughtful AUs: among them: What if Sam grew up in a universe where Dean never existed? And then they meet? (There But For The Grace) What if Sam lives in two universes simultaneously? one in which Jess dies and one in which Jess lives? (Crow on the Cradle)

If you're not in the mood for something long, then try some of her shorter works: they are tight and well paced:
Lost and Found (Sam saves Dean -- but sometimes, things just aren't that simple.)
Blood and Wine Are Red (Eventually, one of those boys is going to get caught.)
Messing Around With Slim (You don't mess around Slim. It's really a bad idea.)

[livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur uses cut tags and offers clear and detailed warnings and ratings on all her fic.

BUT..... if there is on thing in her LJ to read, it is her Supernatural Ten Expressions. Every episode she picks the best expressions from the show and serves them up to us with hilarious captions. Go forth and laugh.

[livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter
Her fic tends towards more darker themes but is also well thought out and well written. I'll start, however, with a story that is not dark to illustrate her wide range:
The Firefly That Loved Metallica
(Dean's soul tastes like candyfloss. It's like a little, warm cloud of spun sugar in Sam's mouth. ) it is sweet and poignant without sacrificing masculine characterization

In Nomine Patris Her Bobby/Dean story is not a pairing I'd necessarily read or believe: but the psychological exploration of Dean's character and his unresolved issues with self-worth and family roles really sells the story to me.

One of the best horror SPN stories I've ever read was written by [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter. It is The Old Gods Return (she has written a small coda to this story but I cannot seem to find it)

and last, if you thought you could never to read an 'end of the world story' and like it - I challenge you to read Starting From Home

[livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter also uses cut tags and offers clear and detailed warnings and ratings on all her fic.

SPN Rec v. 36: One Father's Sons (gen) by stele3

Title: One Father's Sons by [personal profile] stele3 (120,000 words, complete)
Summary: AU for season two. After the car crash, Sam and Dean struggle to deal with their father's death, and make a startling discovery: they have a younger brother, Reese, who's got his own demonic issues.

The summary doesn't do this story justice. The OCs are strong and well written and the interplay between Sam and Dean is very much on the mark. If stories about learning to love and loyalty and family are your thing, this story is for you.

Excerpt:

'06

It took four times.

When Dean's eyes opened the fourth time, Sam saw it happen. Saw realization sink in without any spoken words (between the breathing tube and Sam's unwillingness to disturb the shards of his brother's body with even the faintest whisper). So it all happened underneath the ordered disruption of monitors, in the silences between beeps and hisses and the blink of Dean's bruised lids.

He looked up at Sam who sat beside him, then past him to where their father did not. Sam closed his hands into fists in the sheets and made himself watch: there would be no running away after this, no Stanford, and he was only a little surprised to realize how little that mattered to him right now. His dream had been a dotted line, beyond which lay an endless country. Dean's dream had been family, trinity, a triangle enclosed.

Dean broke in absolute silence, his powerful, deadly body lying still. There was nothing to mark the occurrence but a flutter of eyelashes.

To Sam that seemed more wrong than the empty air at his side. Because this was only the beginning, just a step. If Dean broke now, when he thought their father was lying dead in a freezer somewhere, what would he do when he learned that the truth was so, so much worse?

Sam made himself watch his brother's dream die and knew that he would gladly trade his own to open Dean's eyes a fifth time. His own grief burned in a hard line between his throat and gut, and he heard his father's voice saying Use it. Make your weaknesses into strengths.

He meant to transform grief into rage. Sam had smoked through anger already and felt all of it vanish in the space between his brother's heartbeats.

[personal profile] stele3 has a lovely new website set up that allows you to format and print this story with no wasted space (or just read without having to navigate through 30 LJ chunks). She has also set up a link to a charity (RAINN) to help raise funds for rape and incest abuse survivors.

SPN Rec v. 34: Punxsutawney Sucks (Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love A Guy Named Phil)

Groundhog Day is one of my favorite movies. (nb: it is also one of the Dalai Lama's favorites. Or so I 've been told). So if you're in the mood for a bit of snark, a smidgen of angst and the tale of  Groundhog named Phil, then check it out.

Punxsutawney Sucks by [profile] big_pink

Summary: Six weeks after Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, people are mysteriously bursting into flame.
Rated: Gen-o-riffic. Fun, funny, moderate amounts of angst, but mostly a romp.

Excerpt:

They approached town from the north, saw the signs when they were still a fair distance out. Shit, how could you miss them? I am so going to have a field day with this, Dean thought, glancing at Sam in the passenger seat. “You’re only 10 miles from Punxsutawney, home of Phil!” he read softly, like he had children’s stories when Sam was little. And in the middle of the billboard, a painted image of a big bulky rodent on his hind legs, little forelegs held out almost zombie-like. Dean bit the inside of his mouth, hard. Poor Sammy. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

“Don’t,” Sam warned, as though Dean had subtitles. A little unnerving, that habit, actually.

SPN Insta-Rec v32: Dust In The Wind (Gen)

I love this story. It felt like a dream.

Dust In The Wind by [profile] lyra_wing

It was like a sixth sense. Knowing when a change in the weather would come, knowing which way the dice would fall. As time passed, the sense grew stronger. Sam could tell immediately when someone was lying to him, Dean always got dealt the best hand in the deck, and sometimes, if they both wanted something enough... it'd just happen.
