Too little, too late.

That’s how it went for the Giants Sunday in absorbing a three-game sweep at the hands of the A.L. East-leading Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Center.

Trailing 7-2, the Giants (52-48) climbed within a run with a four-run sixth inning but ultimately fell 8-6 in losing their fifth straight game, including two losses to the Dodgers heading into the All-Star break.

“We finally swung the bats better, gave ourselves a chance at the end but gave up too many runs in the middle,” Giants manager Bob Melvin told reporters. “I don’t think there’s any silver lining in this one. We got swept in a series to start the second half and it’s not what we were looking for.”

The last two wins for the Blue Jays came against Giants’ All-Star starting pitchers, Robbie Ray and Logan Webb. Toronto, in command in their division at 58-41, tied a franchise record with 10 straight wins at home.

Ray fought with his command and didn’t get out of the fifth inning, falling to 9-4. Jose Berrios (6-4) was the winning pitcher, getting help from four relievers. Yariel Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his second save.

Toronto got home runs from Vladimir Guerrero (No. 13), George Springer (No. 17) and Addison Barger (No. 14). Matt Chapman homered for the Giants in the sixth, his 13th of the season.

Chapman knocked out Berrios in the sixth with an opposite-field two-run home run to right to bring the Giants within 7-4. Chapman’s blow drove in Rafael Devers, who hit a single off the fence in right at 106 mph.

Brett Wisely hit a run-scoring single against Braydon Fisher to get the Giants within 7-5. Fisher was removed in favor of Justin Bruihl, with Jung Hoo Lee hitting a single to center to bring home Wisely to make it 7-6. Lee, attempting to take second on a throw to the plate, was called out on appeal at second base after over-sliding the bag.

“It’s the right play and he’s safe if he doesn’t slightly come off the bag,” Melvin said.

A two-out rally by Toronto in the sixth resulted in an RBI single by Guerrero against Tyler Rogers to put the Blue Jays up 8-6.

The Giants scratched out a run against Berrios in the fifth inning on Andrew Knizner’s run-scoring single to get within 3-2, an inning in which there was a chance for more.

Chapman singled to deep short to open the inning, and Dominic Smith walked — the first walk drawn by the Giants 22 innings into the series. Wisely was ruled out in a nine-pitch at-bat that resulted in an infield fly for an automatic out on a play in which second baseman Leo Jimenez lost in the sun.

Knizner singled in a run, but Berrios finished a 29-pitch inning without giving up another run, getting Lee to hit into a force play and striking out Heliot Ramos.

Toronto wasted no time in getting that run back and then some, with Springer unloading a home run to left field off Ray. Two batters later, after a double by Bo Bichette, Ray was done after 4 1/3 innings in favor of Spencer Bivens. Ray gave up five hits, five earned runs and walked five with three strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches, 51 of them strikes.

It was Ray’s first game in Toronto since winning the Cy Young Award in 2021 with the Blue Jays.

“We know Robbie pretty well,” Toronto manager John Schneider told reporters. “He threw a lot more off-speed than we were accustomed to seeing with the change-up and curve ball and he’s still a really good pitcher. We were just kind of hunting in the middle and trying to hit some mistakes.”

Alejandro Kirk reached Bivens for a single on a pitch outside the strike that drove home Bichette, with Barger breaking it open with a two-run home run into the second deck in right field for a 7-2 lead.

With Ray struggling to find the strike zone early and his pitch count climbing, Toronto scored two runs in the third inning on a line-drive double to left with two out by Bichette.

Ernie Clement was aboard with a one-out hustle double to left, with Guerrero joining him on the bases after drawing a walk with two outs. Bichette then hit a 98 mph line drive that temporarily froze Ramos. Ramos then took a step in before the ball sailed over his head, with Clement and Guerrero both scoring.

“It’s a hard hit ball right at him, a ballpark maybe you’re not used to,” Melvin said. “Sometimes you can lose it. I think he just misread it.”

With the roof open for the 12th time this season and the third straight day, the Giants capitalized right away. Lee, batting leadoff, hit a lazy fly to left that David Schneider lost in the sun. Lee wound up on second base with a gift double, and Ramos singled to left to drive him in.

That snapped an 0-for-10 streak by the Giants in the series with runners on base. Devers was next, and he smoked a Berrios pitch at 106.5 mph directly at shortstop Bichette, with Ramos making it back to first. Willy Adames followed by grounding into a double play.

The Blue Jays evened things up with one out in the first when Guerrero hit a 420-foot blast to center field at 105.4 mph. It came on an outside curve that Ray elevated and put in harm’s way.

BRAVES UP NEXT

Hayden Birdsong, who was skipped over for his last start before the All-Star Game to squeeze in another for Ray against the Dodgers, starts against Atlanta on Monday in his first outing since July 6. Birdsong is 4-3 with a 4.11 ERA and went five innings in a win over the A’s two weeks ago, so he’s had plenty of rest. He’ll be opposed by Bryce Elder (3-6, 5.65) at 4:15 p.m. (PDT).

Landon Roupp (6-6, 3.27) opposes Davis Daniel (0-0, 1.80) on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. with Justin Verlander (0-8, 4.99) taking another run at his first win as a Giant in a Wednesday matinee (9:15 a.m.) against Spencer Strider (4-7, 3.59).

The Giants return home on Friday for three games against the Mets and three against the Pirates.

Order in the court! Order in the court! Judges are facing outcry over a suspected AI-generated order in a court.

Fueling nightmares that AI may soon decide legal battles, a Georgia court of appeals judge, Jeff Watkins, explained why a three-judge panel vacated an order last month that appears to be the first known ruling in which a judge sided with someone seemingly relying on fake AI-generated case citations to win a legal fight.

Now, experts are warning that judges overlooking AI hallucinations in court filings could easily become commonplace, especially in the typically overwhelmed lower courts. And so far, only two states have moved to force judges to sharpen their tech competencies and adapt so they can spot AI red flags and theoretically stop disruptions to the justice system at all levels.

In California, thanks to a number of state-level interventions in recent years, building an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, is easier than ever.

Still, construction projects, even of a tiny home, are a major undertaking for the average homeowner. Before lining up contractors and breaking ground, a property owner might spend thousands of dollars and wait weeks just to get architectural plans drafted and approved by a local permitting agency.

Now, though, California is trying to reduce those up-front barriers as part of a broader push to address its housing crisis.

In an effort to make it easier and cheaper for homeowners to build backyard units, a state law passed in 2023 requires local governments to provide homeowners with a slate of pre-approved ADU plans from which they can choose. The homes, sometimes called granny flats, appeal to some families looking for multigenerational housing, while other owners use them as an investment opportunity.

Under the law, AB 1332, which went into effect this year, homeowners choosing a pre-approved plan must have their permits approved in 30 days or less. The typical timeline to get ADU permits approved is 60 to 90 days.

“Reducing costs, reducing confusion, reducing delays — all of that goes a long way to help everyday homeowners who are trying to build new housing,” said Jonathan Pacheco Bell, vice president of policy and programs with the Casita Coalition, an ADU advocacy group.

Homeowners must still pay the architectural firm that drafted the plans a fee for the right to use them — but the costs range from $1,000 to $7,000, which is far below the typical cost of custom plans, which can run between $5,000 and $15,000, said Samantha Dolgoff, who manages ADU permitting for a number of cities in Santa Clara County. A few plans drafted by the nonprofit HEART of San Mateo County can be used for free.

“That’s a huge thing — especially for homeowners who might not have a lot of money and want to save as much as they can for construction costs,” Dolgoff said in an interview.

Construction of an ADU typically ranges from $500 to $600 per square foot, so a small 600-foot, one-bedroom ADU might cost $300,000. Hookup costs for water and electricity add around $15,000 to the total cost. Preparing the foundation of a site can itself cost around $100,000 for an ADU-sized parcel.

The recent law is just one of many ways the state of California is trying to empower residents to build more ADUs, sometimes in the face of local opposition.

Homeowners are responding — last year, one in every five of the 125,228 new housing units built in California was an ADU.

Some cities are making it particularly easy for homeowners to consider their options. A collection of 10 South Bay cities this month rolled out an online gallery called Santa Clara County ADU with renderings of pre-approved backyard units, ranging from small studios to two-bedroom bungalows. Other jurisdictions, like Oakland and San Mateo County, share links to architectural plans directly on their websites.

“For someone who’s not versed in construction, even just getting started and finding an architect can be a big hurdle,” said Christian Murdock, community development director for Mountain View. “This lowers one of those hurdles.”

Of course, even a heavily subsidized set of blueprints doesn’t eliminate all the headaches. Homeowners still need to produce a site plan — a map showing where the ADU will go and how it connects to utilities like water lines and power. Some architects or pre-manufactured ADU companies bundle this service into their offerings. Others charge extra.

Homeowners should be cautious of any initial price estimates they see attached to pre-approved plans, said Sara Dean, principal at IF/THEN Studios, which has a number of pre-approved ADU options.

“California is complicated,” she said. “We have many different seismic zones and soil types, all of which require different structural work. Ask lots of questions to the company selling plans, and if you get answers that are too simple, be wary of that. … ADUs have all the complexity of design and permitting that a home does, but without the square footage.”

Still, in many of the Bay Area’s most expensive communities, where the housing stock is composed of mansions and large-lot homes, an ADU might be one of the only affordable options available to renters.

In Los Altos, for example, the median home sold is 2,600 square feet and costs $4.9 million, according to data from MLSListings. Even a modest two-bedroom home rents for upward of $4,500 a month.

For software engineer Aditi Nagaraj, 36, those prices put the community where she grew up out of reach. But when her father in 2020 decided to build a two-bedroom ADU in the backyard of her childhood home, Nagaraj and her husband, Casey Davis, 37, moved in, seizing the chance to raise their two children, ages 2 and 4, near family. They pay Nagaraj’s parents $4,000 a month in rent.

“It’s such a rare opportunity to be in this area at this price,” Nagaraj said.

Nagaraj’s sister, who lives with her parents in the main home, routinely stops by for breakfast. Nagaraj and Davis bring their kids to the main house for dinner a few times a week.

“It’s community living,” Nagaraj said. “We’re all caretakers of the whole space, and we’re looking out for each other.”

Some cities are offering residents more than just plans. In South San Francisco, unincorporated Alameda County and Marin County, homeowners can also access free building and design support via a partnership with the nonprofit HelloADU.

In San Jose, Mayor Matt Mahan sees ADUs as a vital part of the city’s housing strategy, especially in areas that aren’t good candidates for the type of dense, multifamily housing the city is building downtown.

“Over 90% of our residential land in San Jose is dedicated to single-family homes,” he said. “We believe that ADUs will continue to play a critical role in expanding housing supply through gentle densification of these neighborhoods.”

Remembered for his convivial personality and prolific stories about his service during World War II, which brought him fame on TikTok, Lafayette resident “Papa Jake” Larson died at the age of 102 on Thursday.

“Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away,” his granddaughter McKaela Larson posted on his social media accounts. “I am so thankful to have shared my Papa Jake with you all. You meant the world to him.”

Born on Dec. 20, 1922, Larson came of age just weeks after Imperial Japan attacked the U.S. Naval base of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Larson joined the military and served in the Western Theater of Europe during World War II, eventually storming the beaches of Normandy, France on D-Day, the largest naval, air and land operation in history at the time.

Larson’s service earned him a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honour award, medals that he wore on the crown of a gray bowler hat which was ubiquitous in his TikTok videos.

Many towns around Normandy, which continue to be grateful for the sacrifice of Allied forces to defeat the Nazis in occupied France during World War II, also mourned the loss of the D-Day veteran online, according to the Associated Press.

Larson eventually moved to Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Lafayette, California, where he started posting TikTok videos – as part of what he called “story time” – about his fight against the fascist forces of Europe during World War II. His stories about evading German gunfire amassed Larson more than 1.2 million followers who admired his bravery during the war, his unwavering kindness, and his easy smile.

In February, Larson walked his granddaughter down the aisle for her wedding. He wore his signature bowler throughout the ceremony.

“When the time is right, I will continue to share Papa Jake’s stories and keep his memory alive,” McKaela Larson wrote. “As Papa would say love you all the mostest.”

A man suspected of vandalizing more than a dozen downtown Redwood City businesses with a signature “R” tag was arrested by police Thursday, according to a Redwood City Police Department press release.

Redwood City police arrested Roman Leoncontreras on suspicion of vandalizing 14 businesses between July 13 and 14, leaving a signature “R” – a symbol for Leoncontreras’s first name, according to police – and an outstanding warrant.

Several businesses provided surveillance footage showing a suspect etching the letter “R” into the window glass of their businesses, police said.

Around noon on Thursday, one of the victims flagged down Redwood City police officers to identify the suspect in the downtown area. Officers approached Leoncontreras for further investigation and arrested him at the scene, according to police.

Police booked Leoncontreras into San Mateo County Jail on multiple charges of felony vandalism and an outstanding warrant.

SAN JOSE — San Jose police arrested the youngest brother of former professional football player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman on suspicion of arson early Sunday after authorities said he crashed his vehicle into a post office, causing the entire building to ignite in flames, according to the San Jose Police Department.

Richard Tillman, 44, of San Jose, crashed his vehicle into a United States Postal Service building in the 6500 block of Crown Boulevard in South San Jose at approximately 2:58 a.m. on Sunday. Approximately 50 firefighters responded to the incident early Sunday morning and put out the fire by 4:31 a.m. No injuries resulted from the incident, the San Jose Fire Department reported.

SJPD is working with SJFD arson investigators, United States Postal Service investigators, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to investigate the circumstances that led up to the crash and Richard Tillman’s motive. The United States Postal Inspection Service and the ATF are leading the investigation, SJPD stated. The ATF enforces the federal laws relating to alcohol, tobacco, firearms, explosives and arson.

Tillman is the brother of Pat Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety, who left the National Football League in 2002 to enlist with his brother Kevin in the Iraq war after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

After a tour in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Pat Tillman trained to become an Army Ranger. He was subsequently sent to Afghanistan in 2004, where he was struck by friendly fire and killed on April 22, 2004. At his funeral at San Jose Municipal Rose Garden on May 3, 2004, Richard Tillman gained notoriety with his eulogy for his brother. Richard Tillman questioned the narrative of military officials who said his brother was killed in action by hostile forces. In addition, he was highly defensive of his brother’s legacy against anyone who might attempt to co-opt his brother’s story.

“Pat isn’t with God. He’s (expletive) dead,” he told 2,000 attendees to the funeral. “He wasn’t religious. So thank you for your thoughts, but he’s (expletive) dead.”

Richard Tillman went on to act in numerous Hollywood films such as “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Superhero Movie” and “Over Her Dead Body,” according to the website IMDb. Since then, however, Tillman’s message has drastically changed, as much as his hairstyle and his facial hair, and he spends his time positioning himself as a Jesus-like character or, even, Jesus himself.

Tillman has a lengthy history on YouTube, making videos under the name of Yeshua HaMashiach (a Hebrew phrase that translates to “Jesus the Messiah”) and also listing himself in his profile description as “The Son of the Most High God.” Some of his earliest videos on the platform were simply vehicles for him to state his grievances against his family and to make allegations that his wife had been unfaithful.

“I was talking to ‘MePapa — Yahweh,” he said in a 2023 video titled “Jesus Christ … I’m Jesus Christ.” “I was trying to figure out about with Jesus and all this (expletive). Then I realized I am (expletive) Jesus — which is so (expletive) interesting.”

Somewhere over the course of approximately 1,400 videos he has posted on YouTube, Tillman began tying his belief that he is the son of God with a mission to bring down the government.

“Hey y’all, the second coming here,” Tillman said in a video from July 15. “What I need to do is absolutely prove who I am. And I will do that. I will do that. And it won’t be through thunder and lightning … As far as the next phase of the game, I know what needs to be done. I’m going to take down the whole system without killing one (expletive) person … I will take down the United States government and the world government. And then people will have nothing to say other than ‘(expletive) my mind just fell out of my head, thank you, thank you for waking us the (expletive) up.’ And then I will say you’re welcome. And then let me go on about my day. Just another day’s work for me, boys and girls.”

When he’s not threatening to take down the government or trying to convince people he’s the second coming, Tillman appears to be a major Swiftie in his videos, saying he has a strong bond with the pop star.

“I feel like Taylor Swift goes through the same (expletive) that I go through,” he said while wearing a Swift sweatshirt in a 2023 video. “Taylor Swift is just successful. I’m not.”

Anyone with information about this incident may contact the US Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.

SANTA CLARA – Calling the beginning of football season “training camp” is too soft, regardless of today’s gentler NFL guidelines. The 49ers are starting an intense workshop this week, prompting The Faithful to file these questions into our social-media huddle:

When does camp open? I forgot. (@dough_boy_408)

Ahem, their month-long workshop officially opens Tuesday for all veterans, a week after rookies reported. Full pads and contact are not allowed until after the first four practices.

What is something you are most excited about looking into this season? (@morales_r0j0)

The reboot of both Christian McCaffrey’s offensive output and Robert Saleh’s defensive leadership. The first two road trips to Seattle and New Orleans. The quarter-billion-dollar quarterback. The further away we all get from 2024. And the ultimate finish: a Levi’s Stadium Super Bowl on Feb. 8, with or without the home team.

Will the Niners sign Jauan Jennings to a long-term contract, which I believe he’s earned? (@ljmb127)

He’d like to know that, also. After a career-best season, he is entering the final year of his contract, and I suspect he’ll get another two- or three-year extension, at perhaps halfway to Brandon Aiyuk’s $30 million-per-year stratosphere.

Will Jennings and Aiyuk both be on the team after Game 5 this season? Asking for a friend. (@TreeBark46)

Yes on Jennings if an extension is done this camp. Aiyuk may not make his debut until after that fifth game; if he starts the season on the Physically Unable To Perform list, he’s out the first four games, and because Week 5 is a Thursday game at the Rams, the 49ers may prefer he get a full week of practice before a debut in Week 6 at Tampa Bay.

Hello Cam. With all the question marks at WR, could the front office make a push for Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper? (@Chucho_723)

They could, especially if they detect Jennings might hold out of practices for a big chunk of camp. But that would go against this offseason’s mission to get younger and cheaper.

Is CMC going to get a reasonable amount of touches so he doesn’t get hurt? (@dci24sc)

That, to me, is the No. 1 question for this camp, seeing how crucial he is to the offensive production once the season starts. “We’ve got to kind of protect him from himself,” coach Kyle Shanahan said May 29.

Who are the projected secondary starters? (@andrew.liu.87)

Entering camp, Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green are the starting cornerbacks, with Upton Stout or Tre Brown at nickel back, while Jason Pinnock and a presumably healthy Ji’Ayir Brown are at safety. Only Lenoir is a lock. Let the competitions begin!

Hi Cam. First, I’m knee deep in your book (“The Franchise”) on the curated history of the Niners and really enjoying it. How do you see LBs playing out — Winters on obvious passing and Martin on run? (@lowbridge)

First, thanks for reading — and writing. The 49ers could rotate Dee Winters and Nick Martin, but that’s not the preferred method to establish consistency next to Fred Warner. I’d expect Winters to open camp as the weak-side starter, and Martin will be tested to see if he’s capable of that spot or the strong-side, part-time role. Winters and Martin are fast, so they need to show which has a better grasp of pass-coverage concepts and run-fit rules.

Do the 49ers have a “culture issue” when it comes to contracts, the way the team approaches negotiations, and the way players feel they can utilize leverage? (@jefegolfs)

Contract disputes are an annual summer tradition throughout the NFL. The 49ers actually bucked that trend this year by hammering out extensions for Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Warner before the offseason program ended. Jennings and right tackle Colton McKivitz are each slated for 2025 free agency, so those contract issues are hovering.

Who will you be watching the most and why? (@michael_budd)

The trick to watching camp is to watch, well, all 90 players. In 2022, we didn’t see Purdy take more than a few reps each practice, so it was tough, at least for me, to predict his star turn. Each rep counts for something for everyone.

Does Rourke stay on IR this season? (@Gambowler)

Quarterback Kurtis Rourke is only six months into his anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and there is no reason to rush the seventh-round rookie into action. A medical redshirt season seems likely. Mac Jones and Tanner Mordecai are positioned as Purdy’s backups in 2025.

What might be a surprising storyline coming out of 49ers training camp? (@MrEd315)

A retirement, but I don’t expect one, not from Trent Williams. Camp always produces injuries, and a pleasant surprise would be if the 49ers avoid any serious ones.

Can you give more Nick Bosa content and videos? (@postlomai)

Bosa indeed is a social media superstar and that traffic won’t ease as he enters his seventh season. My day job, however, is not to pap Bosa (slang for photographing one in paparazzi style). I’ll do my best to share whatever images I capture on Instagram and YouTube.

Would Brock Purdy prefer tri-tip from Firestone or Old San Luis? (@paulmateo707)

Should Purdy find himself in San Luis Obispo’s tri-tip paradise, his first progression depends on which end of Higuera Street he finds himself, whether it’s closer to the Firestone institution that’s ensconced in sports memorabilia or Old SLO’s scrumptious sourdough rolls.

Pack your wands, polish your prefect badges, and don't forget the treats - because class is in session at Hairy Pawter's School of Meowgic and Whiskardry. Whether you're a proud Hufflepurr, a noble Gryffinpaw, a cunning Slythenyan, or a wise Ravenclaw, every true Hogwarts student knows the real magical creatures are the cats prowling the castle corridors like they own the place (they do, obviously).

These wizardly feline memes are for anyone who's ever looked at a cat and thought, "Yes, that's clearly an Animagus who just couldn't be bothered to change back". Or for anyone whose familiar refuses to be summoned unless snacks are involved. Honestly, Minerva McGonagall would be proud of this lineup - Transfiguration students, take notes.

From floofs guarding the Room of Requirement to tabbies practicing their Patronus (spoiler: it's also a cat), these memes are full of hissterical Hogwarts energy. So grab your butterbeer, curl up in the common room, and enjoy these magical meowments. Mischief managed? Hardly - the feline chaos is just getting started.

Feline fam, we're frankly feline some type of way. We understand that life happens and things get in the way of your plans, but you can't give someone your cat as a 'temporary' foster, then come back 5 years later and expect them to comply.

The cat has moved on, and you should move on as well. If you really cared about the cat, you would want what is best for it, and we all know how disruptive it can be to continually move a cat around to new homes.

This is why we say this (almost every time) - cats are a 15-20 year commitment. In the purrfect scenario, your cat survives to be a sweet, soft senior cat who just cuddles and sleeps all day. But if something happens and you and your cat have to be separated for some reason, prepurr to say goodbye, unless it's for a short amount of time. It's not fair to the new pawrents who developed a bond and probably spent thousands on their care while you were gone.

Just like all cat parents, we would do anything for our fluffy felines. We buy them the fanciest organic food that money can buy, we make sure our (their) house is full of soft beds for them to lounge in, we make sure their litter boxes are purrfectly immaculate every day…. and yet, there is always someone out there who's beating you at your own game. We thought we did it all for our kitties, and then this cat dad below showed up and put us all to shame.

He went out and built a literal tree-size cat-shaped cat house for his awwdorable tuxedo cat, and now we have to tell our cats that they can't have one. What's even more impurressive than this, however, is that his cat actually uses it. We've bought our cats at least 15 different beds, and they still prefer the cardboard boxes they came in. Anyway, if you want your cat to judge you for not being as good of a pawrent as this guy, go ahead and show them these pictures. Have a great week!

Resilience is a practice

It’s easy to imagine that we should do our work and then, when it doesn’t work as we hope, improvise to fix it.

But perhaps our work is to show up ready and willing to deal with a future we didn’t expect.

I keep writing about it because we all need to keep thinking about it. Especially me.

My friend Ava curated this list:

  1. The only run is the long run. – https://seths.blog/2022/07/strength-through-resilience/
  1. Resilience is a commitment to a design, [something] that works even when things don’t turn out the way we planned. – https://seths.blog/2021/03/resilience-3/
  1. Resilience is what happens when we’re able to move forward even when things don’t fit together the way we expect. https://seths.blog/2019/03/resilience-and-tolerances/
  2. One way to ensure that things work out…is to embrace the fact that nothing is ever exactly on spec, and to build resilient systems. https://seths.blog/2019/03/resilience-and-tolerances/
  3. While precision feels like the way forward, resilience, the ability to thrive when things go wrong, is a much safer bet. https://seths.blog/2019/03/resilience-and-tolerances/
  1. Magic isn’t reliable. On purpose. That’s what makes it magic. – https://seths.blog/2017/08/resilience-and-the-high-end/
  1. Do the best [you] can in small ways…to start moving forward. And when it doesn’t work, try something else. – https://seths.blog/2016/11/resilience/
  1. Resilience is a skill, one that’s probably more valuable than most. – https://seths.blog/2016/01/resilience-2/
  1. Resilience. Given how important it is, it’s surprising we don’t hire for it. – https://seths.blog/2016/01/resilience-2/
  1. …Invest in resilience, to build systems that can handle (or even thrive) when the unforeseen happens. – https://seths.blog/2015/06/control-or-resilience/
  1. It’s a journey, not an event, and working in asynchronous batches is a smart way to stay resilient. – https://seths.blog/2015/01/planning-on-resilience/
  1. Resilience isn’t a bet on one outcome, instead, it’s an investment across a range of possible outcomes, a way to ensure that regardless of what actually occurs (within the range), you’ll do fine. – https://seths.blog/2014/01/accuracy-resilience-and-denial/
  2. A crazy world is certain to get crazier…Hence the need for resilience, for the ability to survive and thrive in the face of change. https://seths.blog/2013/04/in-search-of-resilience/
  3. The choice is to build something that’s perfect for today, or to build something that lasts. – https://seths.blog/2013/04/in-search-of-resilience/
  1. But complex systems are more resilient when we build in the diagnostics for failure from the start. – https://seths.blog/2025/07/diagnostics/
  1. The work of an individual who cares often exposes the grit and determination and effort that it takes to be present. – https://seths.blog/2012/11/effortless/
  1. The disciplined, resilient approach is to go your own speed, regardless of the incline. – https://seths.blog/2025/06/uphill-and-downhill-challenges/
  2. What truly changes the game is when an organization decides to commit to being better at being better. That’s hard to do and difficult to compete against. – https://seths.blog/2024/12/better-at-being-better/
  3. Resilience and frequency increase the chances that the break we are hoping for will arrive when we need it. The resilience to keep at it so that we can live with later instead of sooner. – https://seths.blog/2022/12/sooner-or-later-3/
  4. The only part of a launch that should be live is the part that benefits from being live. Everything else ought to be in a batch, reserved, asynchronous and capable of recovery. It’s a journey, not an event, and working in asynchronous batches is a smart way to stay resilient. – https://seths.blog/2015/01/planning-on-resilience/
  5. Feelings first, then they create a story. Facts come in third. If our goal is to help people make better choices, it helps to first create better feelings. https://seths.blog/2021/07/narrative-and-feelings/

Alright, I think I like tumblr now.

A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it’s a good day for everyone.

That was on July 7th.

Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all–the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it’s immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.

On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs–nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.

There’s a specific chain of reblogs that I’d like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.

But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.

A Tumblr reblog graph. It shows "Original Post" and "My Addition" in the bottom right, and a long, winding path of reblogs leading to a popular post on the far leftALT

99% percent of the people who have seen the post–virtually unchanged from how it left my dash–have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That’s insane to me.

None of those 36 people know that they’re part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.

And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.

You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

Reblog the reblogging post.

Like to ignore its wisdom.

android-malwareIn 2023, Google and its cybersecurity partners teamed up with German law enforcement agencies after discovering BadBox, a botnet comprised of 74,000 Android devices infected with malware.

After deploying a range of measures to suppress BadBox, a much larger threat quickly arrived.

BadBox 2.0

BadBox 2.0 was discovered by HUMAN’s Satori Threat Intelligence and Research team. Their initial report published in March revealed how infected devices were able to request and click on ads without the user being aware, committing ad fraud and laundering.

As part of a botnet able to act as a residential proxy network, devices were also being used for account takeovers, DDoS attacks, and spreading malware. Since infected devices are also capable of executing new code delivered over the internet, without any user interaction, the potential for harm was unusually high.

One million infected devices…human-badbox2

At the time the impact of BadBox 2.0 was described as global, with more than one million devices infected in 222 countries and territories. To prevent the spread, users were advised to only download apps from official marketplaces such as Google Play while avoiding off-brand devices.

A list of device model numbers made available since reveals that cheap set-top boxes manufactured in China appear to account for the majority of infected devices. However, laptop and desktop computers, smartphones, tablets, in-car entertainment devices and digital projectors have all been compromised too.

badboxes

In an announcement late last week, Google revealed that in partnership with HUMAN Security and Trend Micro, its researchers are now battling a botnet comprised of 10 million uncertified and infected devices, running Android’s open-source software (Android Open Source Project), “which lacks Google’s security protections.”

Lawsuit Filed in New York

Google’s actions include a lawsuit filed at a federal court in New York which began in May but with most documents sealed until recently. In addition to a temporary restraining order issued on May 30, on July 1 Google was awarded a preliminary injunction to mitigate the ongoing spread of malware, infection of new devices, and other “criminal schemes”.

The identities of the defendants – Does 1-25 – are reportedly unknown but with some confidence Google’s recently unsealed complaint places the blame firmly on bad actors in China who it believes would not comply with a judgment for money damages.

The Infrastructure Group: Established and manages the “command-and-control” C2 infrastructure (C2 Servers and domains) for BadBox 2.0.
The Backdoor Malware Group: Developed and preinstalls malware on the infected devices and uses that malware to operate a botnet composed of a subset of BadBox 2.0-infected devices to carry out a variety of ad fraud campaigns.
The Evil Twin Group: Develops apps that the BadBox 2.0 Enterprise uses to commit ad fraud via hidden ads.
The Ad Games Group: Connected to an ad fraud campaign conducted through BadBox 2.0-infected devices that uses fraudulent “games” to generate ads in hidden web browsers

Google Obtains Permission to Take Significant Action

Specific details are currently withheld, but it appears that Google has been granted broad permission based on claims under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and the Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), to block (and require other entities to block) traffic to and/or from IP addresses and certain domains.

Other reasonable measures, including seizing control of domain names through registrars and registries, are also at Google’s disposal, to limit the botnet’s ability to operate.

Blocking Measures on Steroidsblocking measures

The FBI’s advice is for users to “avoid downloading apps from unofficial marketplaces advertising free streaming content” and “assess all IoT devices connected to home networks for suspicious activity.”

While avoiding unofficial marketplaces is straightforward, those looking for the latest movies and TV shows are unlikely to find suitable apps offering that content for free anywhere else. Monitoring home networks is likely to prove prohibitively difficult too.

There may be a very good argument for physically destroying these devices. The complaint states that the entire supply chain is compromised. “They are devices manufactured by the BadBox 2.0 Enterprise,” it reads.

But even if malware isn’t preinstalled, it can be installed remotely when devices are switched on by the user or when users download apps designed to look attractive but carry a similarly malicious payload.

The preliminary injunction obtained by Google is available here (pdf)

That's super interesting!

Obviously, my own feelings about subs vs. dubs come from being an American. Almost none of our easily-accessible media is foreign. (Or at least, that was the case before streaming services.) We barely even import English language things from elsewhere. So a lot of the attraction of foreign media for me is that it is foreign, and our dubbing industry is less than stellar to boot. Hearing the original language is a nice break from the monotony of all American everything all the time. Very different from a media landscape where the majority of stuff is imported.

I do, however, notice problems when people cast regular actors as voice actors here too. Some of them are good at it. Many are not. Give me a VA who specializes in that any day.

From the book Organizing Solutions for People with ADHD:

  • Putting a coat on the back of a chair by the door is fine, but if you prefer, use coat hooks and a large catch-all basket for dropping keys, hats, gloves.
  • Small bookcase end-table next to the couch to store craft projects, books, and other things being worked on for easy access.
  • Add a storage unit near the dining room table to transition between eating and working there.
  • Daily toiletry items should be stored in a basket that you can move easily
  • Extra toiletries and medicine cabinet items go in open shelf/basket storage so they can be seen and used easily. If items no longer fit, purge the excess. Don’t obscure the view!
  • If you disrobe in the bathroom, place a tall hamper in there.
  • Keep a set of cleaning supplies in each bathroom

Reblog and say what project you currently have spread on your dinner table in the tags

oh btw archive.org has the first edition of this book available to borrow.

I’ve gotten this book out from the library and it is fantastic. I was wary, because we all know how well most organization schemes work for us, but she is a professional organizer who specifically wrote the book because her usual methods didn’t work for clients with adhd (and then her own daughter, when she was diagnosed) and she had to actually sit down and figure out their needs and adjust her methods accordingly.

For once, a NT author sat down and took the time to really understand adhd and rearranged their whole methodology just to fit, and it shows. She explicitly says that a well-organized adhd house will not look like a well-organized NT house, and that is absolutely fine. Organization has to be about what works for you.

(Also: I had this book sitting in my back office basket at the library I volunteer in for weeks without being able to check it out, because I kept forgetting to return my overdue books. LOL)

These are good! However, I want to add a technique. See I am the sole non-ADHD person in my house. The amount of (organized! Well corralled!) clutter in these rooms would make me feel antsy and uncomfortable. Makes my brain staticky.

BUT! This shit WORKS. And I want/need our home to work for all of us.

So the solution has been figuring out what spaces really need what solutions. Like…I don’t go hang out in the bathroom, so that’s a good space for transparent organization to work- with me taking the opaque drawers for my use because the others don’t like them. The play room is an obvious space to prioritize my daughters needs, to. If I want her to be able to clean up after herself, then I need to make that easy for her to learn to do herself, in a space that works for her.

But the livingroom, where I relax, and where people come over, is a space mostly free of these techniques. Instead, we take turns doing 10 minute clean up’s per night. Since it’s only one comparatively small space and we have a well established and shared routine, that always keeps it easy to tidy. Also, most objects that might have accumulated there have a well established other home to go to.

The kitchen had to be a compromise zone. If there’s stuff all over the counters the space feels upsetting and unusable to me. But things that are in opaque cabinets functionally cease to exist for the other two. The compromise turned out to be keeping some visually not too busy items on the counter, like spaghetti, in a clear container, but to otherwise keep the countertops clutter free. Items like spices, ladles and stuff were replaced with cheap but reasonably aesthetic versions and put on shelves. See, organizing them in a pretty way isn’t just to make my kitchen instagramish. Use of things like grouping, pattern, respect for color harmony, and material reduce the amount of visual noise, which leaves me ok having them visible, without them being hidden.

So like- it’s not all either/or! You can get granular and creative to figure out systems that work for everybody.

BUT! This shit WORKS. And

I want/need our home to

work for all of us.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

The United States Postal Service building in the 6500 block of Crown Boulevard in South San Jose is temporarily closed after sustaining major damage from a vehicle that was driven into the facility early Sunday morning.

USPS officials say that the Almaden location’s “retail and delivery services will resume as soon as it is safe to do so, and all necessary repairs are complete.”

In the meantime, the USPS has released information explaining how customers affected by the closure can still get their mail and use other services.

Customers may pick up mail Mon-Sat from 10 a.m.-2  p.m. Retail services will be available Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Customers are instructed to provide photo ID for all mail pick-up. Retail services are also available at several neighboring stations; you can find a Post Office near you at: https://tools.usps.com/locations/home.htm.”

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information about the incidents should contact Redwood City Sgt. Victor Figueroa at 650-780-7621.
