escapade_con posted: Vid Show Information and Panel Ballot Open! [Escapade Con]

The Escapade Vid Show will be live-streaming this year on Vimeo, then will be available to re-watch at your convenience. We want everyone, including festivids participants (https://festivids.dreamwidth.org/) to submit vids to the Escapade vid show. We are open for vid submissions through February 10. The Panel Ballot is open for voting through February 1. We received almost 100 suggestions, so this is your chance to let us know what you'd like to see on the schedule. escapade_con posted: Tech Information and Call for Volunteers [Escapade Con]

How do I connect to Escapade 31?
Our plans are to have panel conversations (video optional) on Zoom, text chat on Discord, video streaming on Vimeo, and the art show on Tumblr. If you have any concerns about accessing the virtual convention, we will be running a "test drive" session on Saturday afternoon before the convention (February 13) with activity on all platforms. You will be able to try out your system, and get live tech support from convention staff. We want everyone to be connected and confident before the convention launches on February 19.

Do I have to buy hardware or software?
No. All of the applications we are planning to use are free on the user's side. If you want to speak in panels (via Zoom) but your computer doesn't have a microphone, you can connect via phone or tablet. If you don't have a phone or tablet, you can still participate via text chat in Discord. If you want to show your face in Zoom, but your computer doesn't have a camera, you can use a tablet or smartphone.

How can I help?
Thank you for asking! If you're comfortable (or willing to get comfortable) with Zoom, we'd like to have a "tech mod" in each panel to watch the text chat, gather raised hands, etc. and pass that information to the rest of the mods. You'll be able to pick panels you wanted to attend anyway. If you help out at 4 or more panels, we'll refund your reg or credit it toward next year.

We will also be running a consuite channel, open during convention hours (or as long as we have someone to host it) as a place to hang out and chat with other fans. It should be pretty mellow. You don't even have to make cucumber sandwiches (unless you want to).

Escapade is the longest running slash convention in the US. Every year it hosts a vid show of fanvids in front of a live audience. This year, fans have put together a streaming playlist of the vids that were shown over the weekend. Caveat: the first vid is a password protected vid. When you run into a password protected vid, the password can be found be in the info box below the vid. You will enter it, hit play and the playlist should start. If a vid pauses, no worries. Just click play and the playlist will resume.

About the playlist host site Viddercon:

Viddercon is brand new site (many months in the making) that allows fans to build playlists across multiple streaming video platforms. Playlists on this network allow for a mix of vids from You Tube, Vimeo, Peertube, Tumblr, etc. This site is a proof of concept and currently in its very early stages. It is being built by fans for fans. Fans currently working on the project are vidders Garfield (VidderKidder) and Morgan Dawn (MeeeDeee).

As you wander through the site, you may come across other convention vids shows, vid challenges or personal recommendation playlists. The convention vid shows are unofficial collections that the site has been using to test playlist creation and embedding under "real world" conditions. All playlists have been created using publicly posted info and all have been clearly marked as "unofficial".

New for Escapade 2019, an experiment! Do you have crafts that you’d like to share with convention goers but don’t want to commit to missing out on the convention to sit in the dealer room? Do you find yourself at a loss for something to do before the con starts on Friday? I have a small scale solution to these dilemmas. Announcing the first (but we hope not last) Fan Fair! Fanfare? Fair Fans? FanFair!!

xlorp has come down with her predictable travel cold and so is wandering the house miserably. But we planned for it this time and she has a few vacation days to recover. Our plans to see Black Panther will be delayed.

So I'm into my second week of a tough back injury, but we're still planning on attending Escapade. I'll post my cell number under friendslock and you can always direct message me on Twitter or via email. We arrive Thursday and leave Sunday. I'll be traveling with my partner Catherine (xlorp). We won't be doing advanced meal planning (lunches or dinners), so please seek us out if you want to join us in our room eating. I'll post the room number on the voodoo message board in the convention suite.

A new scholarship for 2017 has been endowed through the efforts of our transgender mistresses of technology, Evelyn D.

The scholarship is need based and applications are open to anyone identifying as non-binary or transgender.

To apply or nominate a fellow fan email EscapadeEvelynScholarship@gmail.com with name and preferred pronouns of the potential recipient, the best way to contact them, an introduction, and one thing Escapade or slash fandom in general could do to improve visibility or awareness of gender non-conforming issues. The ideas will be shared with the fan community so be sure to let us know if you do not wish to be credited.

Please limit applications and nominations to those who would otherwise be unable to attend for financial reasons.

I used the AO3's Bookmark feature to create a playlist of the vids shown at Escapade 2016. It was surprisingly easy. I was happy to see how many vidders are taking advantage of A03 to create stable "homes" for the vids, with fandom info and warnings. A few were only on Youtube or the vidder's website/LJ.

We are ramping up for Escapade 26 and are working to finalize our contract with an LAX-adjacent hotel.
Dates: We are 95% certain that Escapade 26 will be held February 26-28, 2016 (with early check-in on the evening of the 25th). If you are already registered, and the final dates selected don’t work, let us know promptly and we will refund your membership or roll the full amount to 2017.
Hotel: TBD, but it will be on the LAX strip (Los Angeles, CA), with a free airport shuttle and available self-parking. We will post an update and hotel reservation link within the week.
Extended Discount: Because hotel negotiations are taking longer than expected, we are extending the discounted registration price of $110 through November 10th. Please take advantage of the discount and register now.
Website: We have re-worked the Escapade site to better support membership information, dealers, artists and vidders. "Escapade is in 9 days, 20 hours, and 20 minutes. I am--I'd say "unreasonably," but it's completely reasonable--excited about this, our 25th anniversary convention.

For regular attendees, much is familiar: same hotel, many familiar friends, hot topics with scintillating discussion, and a certain amount of kvetching because there isn't room on the schedule (or in a day or a weekend) for every panel topic we wanted to discuss.

Some things will be different. We have more new people this year, and some old friends are joining us again. With 25 years behind us, we're celebrating how we got here. With 25 years before us (yes, we're up for 25 more), we're looking at ourselves and the world around us through different lenses, and we expect spirited and enthusiastic debate.

We have a few spaces left. If you're on the fence, now is the time to take action. Wednesday, February 25 is the last day to get hotel rooms at the con rate. We look forward to seeing you.

There is a (shudder) Burger King near the hotel. But really, why bother when an In and Out Burger is one mile away? A bit too far to walk (for some), but the Big Blue Bus will take you there in 10 minutes. And if you have a car, it is only 3 minutes away.

North of the In and Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd is a CVS Pharmacy, a Trader Joes and a Ralphs grocery store. Parking for some of these stores is behind the stores on the Sepulveda Westway. Basically, if there is no parking lot in front, take the streets that will lead you to the back.
