On the topic of the Fourth Wall between the TV show creators and fandom:

''"Spockanalia is "required reading" for everyone in our offices....We have used all the extra copies to make sure that every writer, and anyone that makes decisions on show policy, have read your fanzine....The reason for this is that if we all understand what the fans see in the show; and try to understand why they are fans at all, we can continue to hold those fans."'' Gene Rodenberry, writing in a letter to the editors of the 1968 Star Trek fanzine, Spockanalia.

To be fair, what was in Spockanalia to that point was mostly letters, essays, art and the occasional bit of gen fiction. In fact, IIRC, that letter from Roddenberry was included in only the 2nd or 3rd issue of the fanzine.
