On Fanlore, fans have been tracking fan writers who have given blanket permission to their fellow fans to create podfic.  Recently, there have been discussions about the ethics of moving fan fic from one archive server to another and sharing deleted fanworks.  But I wanted to talk about *why* we create fanworks, not about the packaging and storage of them.  And then Tallihenisa posted a lovely "statement of gift" about her fannish works,  and I read it and went "Hey, that's what I would have said! If I had been awake and paying attention.  Why, I can create a transformative essay from her post!. Maybe even add a dash of tentacle pron to liven it up!!!!!"

Hers is a lovely post explaining that she is participating in fandom for fun, that she views her fanworks as gifts to fandom and that she expects and hopes that fans will continue to love her fanworks for decades to come. I am transforming (aka remixing) her words with edits and  additions of my own.

**********************
TLDR version: Feel free to continue to enjoy my fanworks in their original forms. There will be no Ninjas raiding your homes or computers to take them back.

Long version: These stories, vids and art are my gift to fandom.

As I always have for my 20+ years in various and sundry fandoms, I make up plots and stories and edit my vids for my own personal amusement and enjoyment. I write them and share them for others. Specifically, for you. For those who enjoy them.

If it was all about me, I would have no need to post my fic or vids. There are, frankly, dozens of stories and vids I've never shared with anybody. These here now? I've chosen to share.

I certainly have no wish to see my stories or vids plagiarized. I also don't want them to be altered without my permission. The ones released by me for free online - no one should have to pay for access. (I'm putting them out for free entertainment purposes). I also want credit for having written and created  them in the first place.

However, I here and now, as I always have in the past as well, give my fellow fans and anybody who likes my work, permission to consider these stories and vids as my presents to you.

I will not ask for these gifts back (unless I am forced to for legal reasons or if I need to address issues of my own, or others safety and well-being). They are from me to you, and no matter what I might personally think of my craftsmanship in the future, I have already given the gift and it is yours to enjoy now.

Feel free to download the stories to enjoy on your own, to keep on your computers, to share with friends. If you're still sharing them 10 or 20 or 30 years or long after I'm gone, I will be flattered and honored (and amazed).

I will endeavor to keep sharing more gifts as long as the muse and the time allow. Please, enjoy them, and feel free to consider them as craft items that I have made and given to you.

Thank you for enjoying the gifts. :) It makes the giving so very worth it!

Note 1: other authors can think of their stories as they like. If they choose to consider them "on loan"... That's up to them. I ask these others to not force their mores and assumptions upon the rest of us and presume to know how all of us feel about our fanworks. My philosophy has, and always will be, that my stories and vids are presents to be freely shared (with credit). And for those fans who want or need to wrap legal terms around their fanworks, there is a copyright license that will pretty much say the same thing. It is called Creative Commons License and it allows you, the creator, to tailor your "terms of use" for your fanworks. While I actually use it on this blog and on my fanworks  (mainly because I think a common  use/sharing license is a cool idea that I want to see gain greater traction in the online world), I still prefer to view my participation in fandom more along the lines of a gift economy and rooted in our culture of collaboration and sharing rather than one that is built on legalistic sandboxes, contracts and lawyers.

Note 2: Why I create fanworks is a separate issue from where I choose to archive my stories or vids. To me, the archive/website is just the wrapping for the present. I probably will continue moving my stories and vids across various sites. I may choose to pull them from X,Y, or Z website for X, Y, and Z reasons.  This post is more about the intent behind the creation of the gift rather than the pretty wrapping paper, bow and ribbon.

Note 3: I couldn't figure out how to fit tentacle porn into the essay remix while staying true to tallihensia's characters letters. Maybe next time.
