You do not have to have Dropbox to use that link. To me, that's the advantage over using FTP - it's simply a link like any other URL that people can click on, which is nice if you're not techie-minded. That said, that option doesn't come with the free, 2MB plan but only with the Pro, $8.25/month, 1TB plan.
