“Lettercol is a section of the Spockanalia fanzine dedicated to displaying letters sent into the fanzine by readers.
This is one of the most significant ways in which fanzines influenced early modern fandom culture. Letter sections of fanzines were commonplace and not only shared information, but also shared the thoughts of readers, many of which were many miles apart. Due to the existence of letter sections, and the writings of avid fans, fanzines were the pre-internet forum of fandom, allowing fans to share thoughts and engage in discourse. Fanzines allowed fans to stay connected to Star Trek, and to each other, even over great distances.
This being siad, however, these two examples of early Lettercol both focus on letters sent to Spockanalia by high-profile readers. The Spockanalia #1Lettercol features a single letter, from Leonard Nimoy (Spock’s actor) wishing the editors well in their fanzine endeavors. Lettercol in Spockanalia #2 is much the same flavor, but multiplied. There are letters from Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek writer Dorothy Fontana, James Doohan (Scotty’s actor), Walter Koenig (Chekov’s actor), and even two in-character letters from Dr. McCoy (written by his actor DeForest Kelley), and a rebuttal from Mr. Spock (written of course by Leonard Nimoy). “
