And I am trying to formulate a post about Showing and Not Telling in vidding because we should be talking about that. This idea comes up all the time in fic discussions and it equally applies to vidding (and not so coincidentally with what I am currently working on *and* a vid I am betaing... and another vid I want to beta when it is ready, and another vid I want to have made so I can beta and... wow - this applies to A LOT). So we should be discussing this.

Interesting side by side comparison

An essay from 2008 about the history of Music Videos

The original version had explicit references to fan-vids and the role they played in history

Ex: "Great music videos have the capability of provoking responses much like a great films might and are becoming increasingly accessible in the technological age. The history of the form is interesting as it pulls from many traditions and techniques of filmmaking. Modern music has gone beyond the world of “music television” and onto the internet. Some music fans want to do more than simply view the video; they embark on an artistic endeavor of their own by creating “fan-vids.” Homemade lip-synching videos have also become popular recently and are part of a growing trend of viewers that choose to manipulate images and music to create alternate videos for their favorite songs. Many fan-vids feature popular songs and clips from t.v. shows or anime and have caused various copyright issues on video sharing cites like Youtube. Much of this insight can only be gained from a long love affair with the form and a few copyright issues dealing with videos uploaded on my own Youtube account. Through studying the roots of video making I have gained a greater appreciation for those music videos that inspired me as a teenager and got me through a difficult time in my personal life. I will provide links between my experience and what I have learned this semester to show the merit of several so called “promotional films.”"

The current version omits references to fanvids and changes the title from "Music Videos: Self-Promotion or Self-Expression?" to "Music Vids 101"

The edit happened around  2011

Things I wish I thought of sooner

I'm looking at my music vid folder and I have about 36 gigs worth of vids and I thought I did GREAT by dividing the vids by fandoms...obviously that's not such a great method. What I should have done was what I do for fan fiction when I download stories. Which is label the damn files by vidder then vid title followed last by fandom. So no matter where the file ends up I can look and know some very important details without having to open the vid or scroll through it hoping the vidder added credits to the beginning or end of the vid. Believe it or not some vidders do not do this...
