morgandawn: (Cat How... Interesting!)
Moonhaven - we sent generations to a base on the moon to develop technology to save our planet.  They created the tech but in order to do so, they reprogrammed their society to undo our destructive social conditioning. But has it really worked? And can we live with the result? Excellent worldbuilding, with clunky story-telling, Short series on AMC+, one of their most watched series. Was renewed and then, like other shows, suddenly canceled last month. Amazon Prime viewers get a free 7 day trial of AMC+

Dark Winds AMC+ - remake of Tony Hillerman's first 2 novels. Excellently cast with a strong Native American representation both in front of and behind the camera.

Interview With a Vampire. What makes this version work is that it is told through Louis  POV - the unreliable narrator -  with the aging human journalist as the skeptical and cynical reader who feels that so much of Anne Rice's (ahem, Louis and Lestat) stories are full of bullshit. On AMC+ as well

Poker Face - the actress from Russian Doll meets Columbo.  She can always tell when you lie. Now she's on the run, trying to solve murders and crimes along the way. Has been renewed for a second season. Peacock

Beforeigner (Foreigner from Before)- In Norway, a wormhole has opened, sending Norwegians from the past into the present. Vikings, 18th Century on the cusp of technological and societal revolutions and the Cro-Magnons - a mix of refugees that struggle to assimilate to the modern world. Follows the first Viking police officer as she's paired with a failing older detective. Fascinating exploration of  time travel, refugees and being a time displaced alien in your own country.   Season 1 is $15 on Amazon Prime and they just started offering Season 2 https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0B6CJV2JV/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s1

Our Flag Means Death - what a surprise. Based on historical characters - unbearably naïve and clueless gentlemen pirate hires an incompetent crew and proves to be horrifying bad at pirating. With his crew on the verge of mutiny, enters his hero Blackbeard (played by  Taika Waititi) who seemingly takes him under his wing.  For the most part silly and goofy - but the gay pirate moments were very sweet. On HBO Max, season 2 just wrapped up. This this review gives a brief overview of the show

Warrior Nun - on Netflix we have only watched Season 1. Reluctant heroine chosen to save the world etc.  But what if she really isn't the chosen one? We liked the slow place they used to express her doubt, her questioning of good and evil, what binds us together and the eventual reveal at the end set up season 2 as something interesting. Sadly another series Netflix canceled after 2 seasons.

Three Pines - based on the murder mystery series by Louise Penny, a surprisingly compassionate and ethical Inspector Gamache of the Candia Surete visits the small village of Three Pines to solve a murder. Like the novels he becomes enmeshed in the lives of the villagers as he battles internal corruption  in the police force. I thought the casting for Inspector Gamache was excellent but was disappointed with the superficial attention paid to the core characters of the novels - the eclectic villagers and the village of Three Pines itself. The choice to make them both seem more sinister than welcoming was frustrating. I loved the expansion of Inspector Lacoste - her character was very compelling. I felt Gamache's second in command Jean-Guy Beauvoir was weakly written. But the cranky poet Ruth with her swearing duck was perfect. On Amazon Prime, free to Amazon Prime members.
