From time to time people ask me: how the hell do you collect all that interesting info? I have set up various RSS feeds from other websites and blogs (these are websites and blogs that allow me to do so). But even more importantly, I am using a variety of blog search engines to find the info: Google, Technorati and LJ Find. I plug in what I am looking for ('vidding' or 'ehlers-danlos') and it pulls up the info each day and mails it to me.

But what if you don't want your personal musings about the size of Jared's pxxxxs to show up on these search engines?

To reduce the amount of 'indexing' that is done from your LJ you should set your LJ to 'no indexing. LJ tells you how to do this here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=50

(when you get to the Viewing Options page (a link to that page is in the FAQ above) scroll down to 'Additional Privacy Options)

This setting will only work for Google and a few other search engines. Even though my LJ is set to 'noindex' my own posts show up in both LJ Find and Technorati. This is why LJ suggests that you friends lock your posts. The same can be done if you're posting in a community that allows you to join as a member - ex. the Vidding LJ. You can join Vidding as a member, post and then (like you would in your own LJ) tell the Vidding LJ to lock the post so that only members can see. Casual watchers of the community, people strolling by and (most)  indexers cannot see your post.

Hope this helps.

I've been meaning to do this for a while, but now's a good time. :) Thanks for these informative posts. I read every one. Just yesterday, I had an odd personal experience, and I felt the necessity to lock down my LJ. I'm pretty much all out there, but I didn't like the idea of being trolled/trawled any more than I already am, so I just friends-locked the entire journal, finding my way through your links. *mwah*

Is is time yet? 19.5 hours to go!!
