(NOTE: Some of these recs are for same sex stories with mature themes, among them there may be stories and/or discussions of consensual incest. You must be 18 or older to read these works.
There has been way too little Supernatural content in this journal lately. But I am beta-ing a very intense SPN vid (oh Dean!) and it has fired me up again.
I thought I'd showcase a few of my favorite writers today. There are so many, so I am grabbing a few randomly. Today, two writers who challenge themselves, the readers, and their characters by asking: What if....? If you're looking for simple case stories or comfortable "Sam and Dean and the Impala and their epic love" tales, then these may not be writers for you (more on those later).
kroki_refur
Writes mainly gen with some slash tossed in for leavening. Her writing is solid, she takes time building both the world and the characters (very important when you deviate from canonical characterization or even conventionally accepted views of the characters). She also has written a few thoughtful AUs: among them: What if Sam grew up in a universe where Dean never existed? And then they meet? (There But For The Grace) What if Sam lives in two universes simultaneously? one in which Jess dies and one in which Jess lives? (Crow on the Cradle)
If you're not in the mood for something long, then try some of her shorter works: they are tight and well paced:
Lost and Found (Sam saves Dean -- but sometimes, things just aren't that simple.)
Blood and Wine Are Red (Eventually, one of those boys is going to get caught.)
Messing Around With Slim (You don't mess around Slim. It's really a bad idea.)
kroki_refur uses cut tags and offers clear and detailed warnings and ratings on all her fic.
BUT..... if there is on thing in her LJ to read, it is her Supernatural Ten Expressions. Every episode she picks the best expressions from the show and serves them up to us with hilarious captions. Go forth and laugh.
fleshflutter
Her fic tends towards more darker themes but is also well thought out and well written. I'll start, however, with a story that is not dark to illustrate her wide range:
The Firefly That Loved Metallica (Dean's soul tastes like candyfloss. It's like a little, warm cloud of spun sugar in Sam's mouth. ) it is sweet and poignant without sacrificing masculine characterization
In Nomine Patris Her Bobby/Dean story is not a pairing I'd necessarily read or believe: but the psychological exploration of Dean's character and his unresolved issues with self-worth and family roles really sells the story to me.
One of the best horror SPN stories I've ever read was written by
fleshflutter. It is The Old Gods Return (she has written a small coda to this story but I cannot seem to find it)
and last, if you thought you could never to read an 'end of the world story' and like it - I challenge you to read Starting From Home
