As a follow-up to my earlier "actions introverts can take to fight for our human rights", I bring you the Extrovert Edition

1. Extroverts!  There is so much you can do. Willing to make phone calls or canvass. I suggest checking in with your localIndivisible Groups who work on the local level. Connecting to progressives in your area is also uplifting and allows you to tap into a wider network of like minded resistance. You are not alone!

2. For those who like to text - I found it incredibly moving to text voters to remind them to vote or to send info about a specific candidate. The texts are all pre-programmed, you’re there to respond to questions and direct voters to resources. It can be  a bit intense (many of us are understandably not thrilled to get texts so you will need a thick skin). But one of my proudest moments is when a voter in Atlanta texted me a photo of her voting for the first time in 2016 and when we were able to help two elderly sisters get rides to the polling station. (FYI, don't worry - your cell number is not used for the texting, you work through their platform): Movement Labs - text to voters

If you are looking for ways to  protect our human rights, I can recommend writing postcards to voters.

This is an excellent way for introverts and individuals with limited free time or who are unable to gather in person. There are 2 programs, Postcards To Voters where you send a text message when you have free time. They'll ask you how many postcards you want to write (min is 4), you reply and they'll send you the list. You provide the postcards and the postage. It's perfect as a small, manageable commitment.

Full image

The other one is the progressive Postcards To Swing States. They target key states, you sign up, commit to it a minimum of 200 postcards. They will mail you the postcards and the addresses, you provide the postage. You have approximately 2 months to write the postcards and then you mail them in October.

This is a larger project perfect for a few individuals. It works out to around 5 to 10 postcards per week. You can even create a Zoom meeting with friends who are doing the same project, and get together at a specific time each week to have a social postcard writing event.

And finally, it's therapeutic as heck.

morgandawn: (Vid Free! As Free As The Wind Blows...)

OK folks, here is another scavenger hunt. Eclecticon was a fan run convention held in New Jersey from 1994-2006. They never had a formal vid show, but would show new and premiering fanvids in their video room.

1. Does anyone remember the names of any of the Video Room coordinators?
2. Does anyone have any lists of the vids shown?  I am looking mainly for the premiering vids that were shown in a block each year but any lists will be welcomed. I have the list for 2003.

I have reached out to Kathy Agel but I am casting the widest net possible.

If you are on Counter.Social, I am there as morgandawn. I've had the account since October 2021 but only started using in a few weeks ago. Like most Mastodon instances it has its issues (Mastodon websites or 'instances' are usually run by individuals or small groups, have differing policies based on affinity groups, and are underfunded, under moderated and under performing. Counter.social has been around since 2017 and has the funding and the technical background that most other instances lack, but the policies (blocking China, Russia, North Korea, Iran and Syria due to bots/state actors may not work for many). My suggestion is to try to it out, see if you feel comfortable and then keep it as a meeting place if Twitter proves to be untenable. If you have ever used Tweet Deck you will be familiar with the layout. As for what the culture is like - it has been small, courteous, no ads, no promoted posts, no tracking and interesting one-one interactions. To send DMs you must subscribe which cuts down on harassment. Where it is going depends on who signs up and how they use it. They will reopen on Weds April 27 after they upgrade to add more bandwidth.

LJ Archivr project seamlessly archives public LJ Journals and Communities as local html files with intermediary links that allow the user to click and navigate back and forth through each post of the journal or community. Clean formatting is preserved using a consistent clean theme for all backups. In addition a spreadsheet inventory of all posts with time, date, poster, and number of comments per post is saved to a spreadsheet tab and can be converted to universal formats such as csv. The process is automated and very thorough. It will navigate through paginated pages of comments and even expand threaded comments to ensure all comments are captured. Does not require membership to the community (but it helps with downloads of community restricted content). Anyone interested feel free to contact the developer [personal profile] vidderkidder directly or if you know of anyone who would be interested feel free to share with them.

Important note about online conventions:
1. Find out what their 'con-time' is - if the convention is held in the US and you are based in the EU, you may miss programming
2. Push the organizers to be upfront exactly what will be recorded so that if you are in another time zone, you can watch later. Many will be vague say "some things will be available for playback" or "we will decide this 2 days before the convention starts".  But in many cases all that will be available will be the vidshow or a 20 minute pre-recorded slideshow presentation. Which is fine for many, just be aware.

Also, most of the conventions below will be using Discord to conduct all convention chat. Many will be using Zoom as well. Check to see you computer and Internet can handle the bandwidth and programs

Finally, the conventions that will be hosting hybrids - online and in person -- will be doing this for the very first time. If the convention membership is small (under 150 ), you can expect activity and options to be weighted either towards in person or online because there may not be enough members doing both.

We've received multiple reports of crossposting to LiveJournal silently failing, and many people have asked us about the problem. Unfortunately, the issue is not one that we can resolve: it happens when someone has automatic crossposting set up and has changed their LiveJournal password, but hasn't updated the password on their Dreamwidth crosspost settings. The number of failed logins trip LiveJournal's "attempted account hacking" detection system and our IP addresses are locked out from the site.

For a decade or so, when this happened, we were able to contact them and have them remove us from the lockout list manually and whitelist our IP address range so that it wouldn't happen again. At some point in the last several years, they switched to telling us that the blocking is automatic, they aren't able to whitelist any IPs manually, and that we were mistaken when we were able to resolve the issue for a decade by emailing them and having them whitelist us manually; by this point, they no longer respond to us at all about the issue. (The delay in our posting about the issue has been, once again, us attempting to contact them unsuccessfully and getting no reply.)

When antis try to "clean up" fandom, do they realize they're advocating for the corporatization of fandom spaces? Do they realize they're asking for fandom to be monitored and moralized to the same degree as children's cartoons?

Do these antis really think THEY'LL be the ones to decide what gets censored, once they win the purity war? Newsflash: Some faraway cishet white exec will make those decisions from a corporate office somewhere. Why do you want sterilized corporate oversight so badly?

It's a GIFT to have such an untamed queer space. Cries for the purification of fandom will lead to regulation from corporate groups like Apple and their robots—and queerness WILL go out the window with the "bad ships" and nsfw art.

Blurring faces was suggested in the public discussions, and several people pointed out that there are free apps for smartphones and computers that can be used, and these are so easy to use that there's no reason not to require blurring. I disagree.

I'm going to use this example to touch on the wider topic of Fanlore accessibility and fannish accessibility in general.

In 2010, I attended Vividcon a fan run vidding convention. It offered a 'swap table' where people could leave DVDs, CDs, books for free (a small donation to the convention to help pay for the free snacks was encouraged). That year someone left multiple data CDs with fanvids

No one was interested so I gathered them up & brought them home. They were older fanvids - a few from 1996, most between 2002-2009. They were small in size & low resolution & some were from vidders who had already remastered them into larger and better online viewing

In the early-mid 2000s online streaming was not feasible for many, so fanvids needed to be small in size and downloaded to computers to be watched. Fandoms included: Angel, Buffy, Dark Angel, Due South, Farscape, Firefly, Harry Potter, Highlander, Invisible Man, Lord of the Rings....

Queer As Folk (US), Sentinel, Slings and Arrows, Smallville, Star Trek Enterprise, Star Trek TOS, Star Trek Voyager, Star Wars, Stargate SG1, Witchblade, Xena

I finally have a searchable index online so if you are one of the vidders, feel free to drop me a note for a copy of your older vids. Note that I am one person so if I get too many requests (unlikely but thought I'd mention it anyway) it may take awhile. https://zinedom.org/cd_spindle_fanvids/

The complete list of vidders is here. I The names are listed as they were stored on the data CDs, but I abbreviated last names on this page https://zinedom.org/vidders-vividcon-cd-spindles/

Update for all fan #vidders. Starting July 23 unlisted videos that were uploaded before 2017 will be automatically set to private & current embedded links on AO3 or other sites will be disabled and can no longer be viewed by anyone except you.. If you want to keep your unlisted #fanvids accessible, you must opt out. https://support.google.com/youtube/contact/older_unlisted_update

**This change impacts only unlisted videos uploaded before 2017** To keep those unlisted video links still working and not lose your comments or views, use the opt out process

Reason for this change (they claim) is for a security update. You have the option to re-upload a new unlisted video to take advantage of the "security" update, but you lose your comments and your views  https://support.google.com/youtube/contact/older_unlisted_update

Note they say they will email you an acknowledgment once you submit the opt out ("Your response has been recorded and emailed to you for your records.)  I have submitted 2 so far & have received nothing.  If not,  check again in 24 hrs.

Also note if you have multiple email YT channels under different emails, you need to be signed into the channel owner account to submit a proper opt out for that channel.  This must be done at Google level, not Youtube.

Ex: I have two YT channels. One under MyMain@gmail.com and one under OldYouTubeAccount@hotmail.com When I surf the web I am always signed into MyMain@gmail.com as my default

To submit the opt out for the second YT channel, I had to log out of MyMain@gmail.com at https://google.com, then log in as OldYouTubeAccount@hotmail.com. I clicked on the icon in the upper right to verify I was logged in correctly at the root Google level and then followed the opt out instructions.

When you are at the opt out page and you paste your Channel ID, at the very bottom it will show the YT account owner email. This is your final check to make certain you are logged in correctly.

How do I connect to Escapade 31?
Our plans are to have panel conversations (video optional) on Zoom, text chat on Discord, video streaming on Vimeo, and the art show on Tumblr. If you have any concerns about accessing the virtual convention, we will be running a "test drive" session on Saturday afternoon before the convention (February 13) with activity on all platforms. You will be able to try out your system, and get live tech support from convention staff. We want everyone to be connected and confident before the convention launches on February 19.

Do I have to buy hardware or software?
No. All of the applications we are planning to use are free on the user's side. If you want to speak in panels (via Zoom) but your computer doesn't have a microphone, you can connect via phone or tablet. If you don't have a phone or tablet, you can still participate via text chat in Discord. If you want to show your face in Zoom, but your computer doesn't have a camera, you can use a tablet or smartphone.

How can I help?
Thank you for asking! If you're comfortable (or willing to get comfortable) with Zoom, we'd like to have a "tech mod" in each panel to watch the text chat, gather raised hands, etc. and pass that information to the rest of the mods. You'll be able to pick panels you wanted to attend anyway. If you help out at 4 or more panels, we'll refund your reg or credit it toward next year.

We will also be running a consuite channel, open during convention hours (or as long as we have someone to host it) as a place to hang out and chat with other fans. It should be pretty mellow. You don't even have to make cucumber sandwiches (unless you want to).

If either of these appeal to you, please email volunteer@escapadecon.net.
